He caught himself after two steps.

What the hell was he doing?

He was here to do a job, not get laid.  Still, as he watched the slow roll of her hips and the way tendrils of thick crimson-colored hair slipped from her topknot to tease the back of her neck, he imagined coming up behind her, slipping his hands around her hips to her belly and losing himself in her heat.

 While I'm not currently reading this one, I will be in a few short days.  I'm currently reading an ARC, and since they never really match up in pages, and sometimes, they get changed, I chose to stick with a finished copy instead.

Suddenly, there were loud bangs and pops as fireworks appeared overhead, and everyone in the crowd looked up and cheered.  While they were distracted, I flew down, snatched the earphone out of the guy's ear, and shot back into the air.  As he looked desperately around for it on the ground, I pressed the mute button and shoved it into my ear.

"I know what you just!" Old Mrs. Landry swung the door open.  Its rusted hinges screamed, and the frame hit my shoulder, knocking me down.

Struggling to my feet, I cringed when Old Mrs. Landry came down on me.  Her fingers dug hard into my chin; she forced me to meet her eyes.  Even in the heat of summer, her touch was cold.

Black in the torchlight, they shone with iridescent blues and greens, as they began to move, like oil rainbows on dirty water. The thick, scaly plates that covered their bodies moved like a suit of armor, but they were not unbalanced and clumsy as a Human in a suit. They moved as though made of fluid, rolled like quicksilver as they advanced into the hall, steam roiling from their flared nostrils, surveying the battle with their hungry red eyes.

We grin at each other, and suddenly he stands up and pulls me to my feet. Off balance, I rock close to him for a minute. Close enough to learn that he smells like clean laundry. His hands linger on my arms a second and I try to step back, but he tightens his grip. "Do you really want to do this?" His voice is low and all traces of his grin are gone.

He was, and he was really good at protecting me. But I was his sister, too, and how well would I be proecting him if I let him have the scoll? Rule number four stated whoever possessed the scroll also possessed it's power. I couldn't control it, and I was marked. How would he be able to deal? Even if he just locked it up in a safe, he'd be susceptiple to its pull--I was certain of that with every throbbing molecule in my body.

From that characteristic gesture, she recognizes Kiko, who was every bit as dramatic as a kid, always blaming the menehune, Hawai'i's version of the devilish elves, whenever he lost his homework or arrived late for school. Even more impressive was that Kiko had seen the Night Marchers, something he confessed to Stevie at recess one day in hushed, terrified tones, but only after she swore she'd never tell.

Hard to believe a night that included an explosion in a crowded church filled with werewolves, vampires, and trolls could get any worse, but I'd underestimated the potential.
